Madrid
Madrid isn't a classic wine-tourism destination, but it's better positioned than it looks for a winery day trip: Sierra de Gredos is an hour away, Ribera del Duero an hour and a half, Rioja a long three hours. The city makes a perfect base for the kind of trip that mixes urban culture (museums, wine bars, food at every level) with day visits to bodegas. And within Madrid province itself, the garnachas from Pelayos de la Presa or Cebreros have spent the last ten years rewriting what people expect from Spanish garnacha.
