Comando G is the project that changed the conversation around Sierra de Gredos garnacha. Daniel Landi and Fernando García work tiny plots (some under one hectare), vines that cling to granite at 900-1,200 meters, and produce wines now sold internationally as a benchmark for the variety. Visits are difficult to arrange — production is small, slots are few — but worth the effort for anyone who wants to understand what Spanish garnacha can become.

Marañones is one of those projects you hear about in lowered voices among people who follow Sierra de Gredos garnacha. Fernando García started in 2008 with old vines (40-80 years) in Pelayos de la Presa, granite soils and elevations up to 900 meters. Clean-fruited wines with surprising freshness and fine tannins — closer to a Burgundian concept than to the stereotype of powerful garnacha.
Peñafiel · Ribera del Duero
Protos is the original winery of D.O. Ribera del Duero (the two cooperatives that merged in 1927 coined "protos" — Greek for "first"). The modern roof, designed by Rogers Stirk Harbour + Partners (Centre Pompidou, Heathrow T5), consists of five parabolic arches covered with ceramic tile that converse with the medieval castle dominating the town. Inside, a 2-km underground gallery houses oak barrels. The Protos Reserva and Gran Reserva range is a Ribera benchmark.
Aranda de Duero · Ribera del Duero
Visiting Vega Sicilia is a bit like going to the Zarzuela theatre: you book ahead, there's a protocol, and when you arrive you can tell the institution knows exactly what it is. Founded in 1864 in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid), 35 km from Aranda, Spain's most prestigious winery and one of the few that hasn't given in to trends. Only four wines — Único, Único Reserva Especial, Valbuena 5° and Alión — in small batches at high prices. Único is probably the most expensive Spanish wine on the secondary market. Dominant grape is Tinto Fino, with Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot blended in. Visits are by reservation only (weeks or months ahead) and typically include a vertical tasting of Único across vintages. If you can muster the budget and schedule, it doesn't resemble any other visit in Spain.
