How to get to wineries
Most historic bodegas are inside Jerez itself or within walking distance of the cathedral — no car needed. González Byass, Lustau, Sandeman: all in the city. For wineries in El Puerto de Santa María or Sanlúcar, take the train (15-30 min) or rent a car for a day.
When to visit
Spring (March-June) and fall (September-November). The Feria del Caballo (May, week-long horse festival, all-day flamenco) is unforgettable but the city is packed. The Fiesta de la Vendimia (early September) is more wine-focused. Avoid August — it gets to 40°C.
What to expect at a sherry winery
Tours are 90-120 minutes, typically include the whole production tour through the soleras-and-criaderas system, then a tasting of 4-6 wines (Fino, Manzanilla, Amontillado, Oloroso, Pedro Ximénez at minimum). Pricing €18-45 per person. González Byass adds a small train through the bodegas; Tradición includes the painting collection. Book online; English tours are standard.
Where to stay
Hotel Casa Palacio María Luisa (boutique in a 19th-century palace), Hotel Los Jándalos Jerez (modern, central), Hotel Bodega Tío Pepe (inside the González Byass bodega complex — splurge).
